Recreational Opportunities

Lake Louise lies about 32 miles northwest of Glennallen and serves as the gateway to Lake Susitna and Tyone Lake.  Together the three lakes are the largest lake system accessible by car in Alaska.  The area is a designated State Recreation Area, and is the only place in Alaska that you can see four spectacular mountain ranges.  Lake Louise serves as a "jumping off point" to remote Alaska as well as a convenient overnight stay for travelers between Anchorage and Valdez.  The 180-mile drive from Anchorage is one of the most scenic in Alaska.  This is a favorite playground for Alaskans year-round and is also a popular get-away for corporate retreats.

Wildlife

The natural beauty of this part of Alaska is an incredible source of photographic and video opportunities.  Visitors can usually catch a glimpse of some of the abundant wildlife in the area.  Perhaps most impressive is the annual migration of the Nelchina caribou herd in October and November--a herd of 30,000.  Other wildlife that call Lake Louise home includes moose, wolf, bear, fox, sheep, lynx, trumpeter swans, and cormorants.  Spring and fall bring a wide variety of Alaska's birds as they migrate through the area.

Fish

Fishing

Lake Louise sports four species of fish - lake trout, whitefish, burbot and arctic grayling.  The lake trout run from 8 to 12 pounds, but 20 pounders are not uncommon.  Rainbow trout and landlocked silver salmon are found in several of the smaller lakes nearby, and some of the best salmon fishing in Alaska is only a short drive or flight away.

Winter

Winter activities include several snowmobiling events with hundreds of miles of groomed and marked trails for cross-country snowmobiling.  Cross-country skiing, skate-skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and ice fishing are also very popular.  The northern lights can be spectacular at Lake Louise, and cross-country skiing or snowmobiling under the northern lights is something you'll long remember.
